ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – For the second straight day, a nationally ranked squad took down the University of Rochester women's tennis team, with #13 Case Western Reserve University topping the Yellowjackets 5-0 in the consolation round of the UAA Championship at Sanlando Park.
The Spartans (14-4) entered the weekend as the #4 seed in the UAA bracket, but were upset in Thursday's opening round by fifth-seeded NYU. Rochester (6-12), fell to top seed and #1 ranked Chicago in the opening round.
CWRU boasted three regionally ranked singles players and two regionally ranked doubles teams in its lineup, with two of those singles individuals also ranking among the top-40 singles players in Division III.
Rochester dropped all three doubles points, but put up a solid effort in the defeats. At number one, CWRU's Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey, ranked #2 in the central region, posted an 8-3 win over
Josephine Libby and
Rola Abouzeina for the opening point.
At third doubles, Nina Hoog and Anna Kan topped
Jaclyn Dron and
Sanjana Karnam 8-4. In the two slot, UR's
Jasmin Toor and
Stephanie Kim fell in a close 8-5 match to the regionally ranked duo of Radha Patel and Katalina Wang.
When play flipped to singles, Case Western needed only two points to secure the match, with Asha Shukla and Shreya Ramani earning those points in straight sets for the Spartans. At fifth singles, Shukla made it 4-0 CWRU with a 6-0, 6-1 win over
Neha Dania, while Ramani won the clinching point at six against Kim, winning 6-3, 6-0.
In other singles action, UR's Libby was locked in a tight battle at number one against Kassaie, with the matchup featuring two of Division III's top 30 players. Kassaie won the opening set 6-4, with the second being tied 1-1 when the match was decided.
At two, Abouzeina matched up against another nationally ranked player in McCloskey. After a 6-1 loss in the opening set, Abouzeina was more evenly matched in the second, but was trailing 5-3 after CWRU won the clinching point.
In the three spot, Pater was leading Karnam by a set, and Toor trailed Anna Kan at four.
Rochester wraps up the UAA tournament against #31 Brandeis University in the 7th place match on Saturday morning. CWRU plays #14 Carnegie Mellon for fifth place.
