ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – A high-powered team from top-ranked Case Western Reserve University picked up a 5-0 victory over the University of Rochester men's tennis team on Friday morning during the UAA Championship quarterfinals at Sanlando Park.
#1 CWRU moves to 26-4 on the season and will play in Saturday's semifinals. Rochester drops to 7-9 overall and will play in the consolation round tomorrow afternoon.
The Spartans lineup featured three nationally ranked singles players, the nation's top doubles team and four singles players and two doubles teams in the central region rankings.
Case, who has not lost to a Division III opponent this season, picked up the early points in the match with 8-1 and 8-2 wins at #1 and #2 doubles, respectively.
The Division III #1 ranked doubles team of James Hopper and Vishwa Aduru earned the win at the top spot over UR's
Kai Yuminaga and
Krish Vennam. At two, #15 regionally ranked Diego Maza and Christian Provenzano won over
Kenneth Lee and
Ahaan Malhotra.
Rochester's third doubles team of
Rahul Ravi and
Kavin Shukla kept it close for a good chunk of the match against Ansh Shah and Dahil Dayal, holding serve at 4-4 through eight games. The Spartans took control after that though, earning wins in four of the next five games to sweep doubles with the 8-5 win.
In singles, Case Western Reserve took all six of the opening sets, with only Yuminaga at two and Ravi at four earning more than one game victory. Yuminaga dropped his set to nationally ranked #40 by a 6-3 score, while Ravi was defeated in the opening set by #18 Ansh Shah 6-2.
Shah earned another quick set win to finish off Ravi, posting a 6-1 score in set two, putting the Spartans up 4-0. To clinch the match, fifth singles player Casey Hishinuma was earning a 6-1, 6-3 win over Malhotra.
With the Spartans up 5-0, the rest of the singles matches went unfinished, as at the UAA Championships, matches are played to decision, rather than completion.
Shukla was holding strong in his second set against regionally ranked Michael Sutanto, down just 4-3 when the match ended.
In the consolation round, eighth-seeded Rochester will battle #28 Brandeis (fifth seed) for a spot in the fifth place match. Top seeded CWRU will take on #7 Emory (fourth seed) in the semifinals.
