ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team will play for seventh place at the UAA Championship after falling to #28 ranked Brandeis University by a 5-0 score at Sanlando Park on Saturday afternoon.
UR's record falls to 7-10 overall on the season, while Brandeis improves to 12-7 with the victory in the consolation round at the UAA competition.
The Judges got off to a fast start, earning an 8-0 victory at first doubles from Tommy Harrison and Dylan Walters, the #13 regionally ranked team in the Northeast region.
Brandeis kept it rolling in doubles, posting an 8-3 win at third doubles and an 8-4 win at second doubles. Alex Merson and Chen Liang picked up the third doubles win over
Kavin Shukla and
Rahul Ravi, while the second team of Simon Kauppila and Hunter Levine were the Judges winners against
Kenneth Lee and
Ahaan Malhotra.
During singles play, UR stayed competitive in multiple matches, with Lee earning a first set 6-3 win at sixth singles against Jack Goldstein. The Brandeis player returned the favor with a 6-3 win in the second set before the overall match was finalized.
Brandeis got its fourth team point from Chen Liang over Ravi at fourth singles, winning 6-2, 6-0. At second singles, the Judges clinched the match when Kauppila topped
Kai Yuminaga 6-2, 6-2.
In other singles action, UR's Shukla and Brandeis' Merson went to a tiebreak in the opening set, with Merson edging out the win 7-6 (8-6). In the second, Shukla held a 3-0 lead before the match concluded.
At first singles,
Krish Vennam dropped a tight first set to Walters by a 7-5 score, with the second set again sitting close, with Walters holding a 2-1 lead.
Rochester wraps up play at the championships on Sunday against NYU at 8:30 am, with 7th place in the conference on the line.
