TROY, NY – University of Rochester women's lacrosse fell to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers, 12-6 on Saturday at East Campus Athletic Village Stadium.
The Engineers got off to a quick start, scoring four goals out of the gate to take an early lead. Rochester would counter with three of their own from
Lorelei King and
Grace Crochiere, to pull within one, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter.
And while RPI slowed UR's run with Sophie Goddard's advantage goal with 13:04 left in the second, the 'Jackets would score two more to knot the score at five-all.
Alyssa Gorny found the back of the net with 8:54 to play until the halftime buzzer to pull Rochester within one, before
Emma Little's unassisted score leveled the score at 5-5 with 3:37 remaining in the second.
However, the Engineers would find the back of the next with 1:22 left in the half to go into the locker room up a goal and then scored four more in the third, holding the Yellowjackets goalless in the period as they extended their lead.
Sophie Goddard got the third-quarter scoring started with one of her two goals on the afternoon before back-to-back scores by Ella Graff made it a 9-5 RPI lead. Mia Banglmaier then beat the buzzer, finding the back of the net with one second left in the quarter to make it a 10-5 advantage for RPI.
And while
Gracie Giannettino netted the first score of the fourth for the 'Jackets', cutting RPI's lead to 10-6, the Engineers' would hold Rochester to just one second-half goal, finding the back of the net twice more as they finished off the 12-6 victory.
Rochester falls to 9-7 (4-5 LL) with the loss, while RPI moves to 10-4 (5-4 LL) with the win.
Crochiere led UR with a pair of goals, while Giannettino notched a team-high three points with a goal and two assists. King led UR in the center circle with three draw controls, while
Emily Geiss, Giannettino and
Abbey Smith each recorded three ground balls.
Defensively, Geiss made 12 saves in goal, while Giannettino caused a team-high three turnovers.
Rochester will wrap up the regular season with another Liberty League matchup against Union College on Saturday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Fauver Stadium.
