Strong Start to Singles Earns UR a Win Over William Smith

GENEVA, NY – Four straight wins to open singles play was enough for the University of Rochester women's tennis team to rally for a 5-4 victory over host William Smith College on Thursday evening at the HWS Tennis Center.

The victory pushes Rochester's record to 5-8 on the 2022-23 campaign, while William Smith slips under .500, sitting at 6-7 in dual match competition this season.

Rochester trailed 2-1 after doubles play, picking up its lone early win from the first doubles pair of Josephine Libby and Rola Abouzeina. The two won 8-6 over Isabelle Goings-Perrot and Haley Levine, finishing as the second of the three doubles matches.

Sandwiching around the UR win were two Heron victories, coming from Julia Pida and Marina Montagne at #3 and Audrey Camacho and Natalie Haythorn at #2. The third doubles duo topped UR's Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor 8-5, while the number two match saw the William Smith team top Sanjana Karnam and Neha Dania 8-6.

In singles, UR's All-American Libby tied the overall score with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Goings-Perrot at number one. Abouzeina finished off her match in the same fashion at number four, winning 6-0, 6-1 against Haythorn, pulling the Yellowjackets in front.

Shortly after, Dania won 6-2, 6-0 over Pida at number five to put UR within striking distance of the match. Karnam earned the clinching point with her 6-4, 6-0 win at number two against Levine.

William Smith fought back with points in the final two matches at #3 and #6 from Camacho and Montagne, but it wasn't enough at the Yellowjackets had already secured the overall team match win.

UR's next match is a crosstown contest with RIT, set for next Wednesday at 4 pm on Rochester's River Campus.
