Softball Keeps Rolling with DH Sweep of Medaille

University of Rochester softball won its ninth and 10th-straight contests with a dominant, doubleheader sweep of the Medaille University Mavericks on Saturday at the Medaille Sports Complex. The 'Jackets shutout the Mavericks over both games, taking game one, 13-0, and game two, 10-0, in a run-rule-shortened five innings.

With the sweep, Rochester moves to 13-5 on the year, while the Mavericks fall to 8-8.

GAME ONE: Rochester 13, Medaille 0
Following Bailey Nicholoff's one-out single in the top of the first, Jenna Gorecki smacked an RBI double to left field, scoring Nicholoff to give the Yellowjackets an early lead. Madi Turner then followed Gorecki's RBI base hit with one of her own, singling home Gorecki to give Rochester an early 2-0 lead.

And while the Mavericks would tally a pair on hits in the bottom of the frame against Molly Broccolo, the first-year got Abbigail Doherty and Kaylee Drago to ground into back-to-back fielders' choices to strand a pair and end the Mavericks threat.

Broccolo then set down the next nine Mavericks' batters, working 1-2-3 frames in the second, third and fourth before Rochester got back on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.

Ally Kim reached on an error to lead off the top of the fifth and promptly stole second. Nicholoff followed with a single to left, advancing Kim to third before Nicholoff took second to put two on for UR with nobody out. A batter later, Gorecki drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bases for Turner, who cleared them with a three-run triple to left, extending Rochester's lead to 5-0.

The Yellowjackets added another run in the top of the sixth on Nicholoff's RBI double, and after Broccolo worked out a bases-loaded jam, stranding all three Maverick base runners in the bottom of the inning, the 'Jackets put up a seven-spot in the top of the seventh.

Gorecki's leadoff double got things started for the 'Jackets, as back-to-back singles by Turner and Savannah Nowak plated UR's first run of the inning. And after Nowak stole second, Hunter Gilbreath loaded the bases with a walk.

A batter later, Alexis Klee scored a pair with a two-run single to center, and after Kim reached on an error to re-load the bases, Nicholoff moved everybody up 90 feet with an RBI single to make it a 10-0 Rochester lead.

Then another Maverick error on an attempted pickoff allowed Klee to score, before Hannah Keiper reached on another defensive miscue, plating two more to extend the lead to 13-0.

Broccolo then made quick work of the Mavericks in the bottom of the seventh, striking out a pair to finish off the 13-0 victory.

Broccolo (8-2) earned the win, striking out a career-high nine over 7.0 innings pitched for the first-year's fourth shutout victory of the year. Kaitlyn Alguire (2-2) took the loss for Medaille, allowing 13 runs, seven of which were earned, on 14 hits.

At the plate, UR tallied 13 runs on 14 hits, including five doubles, a triple and six stolen bases. Nicholoff led the 'Jackets with a four-hit day, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while Gorecki went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, tying the single-game record for doubles.

Klee and Turner also turned in multi-hit performances, with Klee going 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI, while Turner went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.

GAME TWO: Rochester 10, Medaille 0 (5 inn.)
Kim's 12-pitch walk set the tone for the Yellowjackets in game two, as UR again struck first, taking an early lead in the top of the first. Kim quickly stole second, before Nicholoff drew another walk and Keiper reached on a fielder's choice, putting two on with just one out for Gorecki.

Gorecki drew another walk to load the bases for Turner, who was hit by a pitch, scoring Nicholoff to give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Jensen Sminchak and Loren Castilloux then hit back-to-back two-run doubles, bringing four more runs home and forcing the Mavericks to make an early pitching change down 5-0.

In the circle for UR, Emily Sharlach worked around a pair of singles to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, and the Yellowjackets got right back to it in the top of the second.

Nicholoff led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and stole second, and while Bailey Friot retired the next two batters, back-to-back doubles Turner and Sminchak brought home two more runs to extend the lead to 7-0.

That'd be all Sharlach needed in the circle, as the senior settled down and didn't allow a base runner after the first, retiring the final 12 batters of the game for the Mavericks.

Rochester would add three more in the top of the third on Kim's RBI triple to center, scoring Castilloux following a leadoff single, a wild pitch and Keiper's RBI double to go up 10-0, before Sharlach and the 'Jackets cruised to a run-rule shortened, 10-0 victory.

Sharlach (1-1) picked up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out six over 5.0 innings pitched. Alguire (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits, walking three over 0.1 of an inning pitched.

Castilloux (2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBI) and Sminchak (2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI), turned in multi-hit days to lead the Yellowjackets, as UR recorded seven extra-base hits, including two triples, one from Kim and another by Nicholoff.

The 'Jackets also added four stolen bases, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits, walking four times and striking out just twice.

The 'Jackets next keep off a busy week with a trip to Fredonia, NY for a non-conference doubleheader against the Devils on Tuesday, April 11 at 3:00 p.m.
