Trio of Goal Scorers Help Women’s Soccer Past RIT in Season Opener

HENRIETTA, NY – Behind three different goal scorers, University of Rochester women's soccer (1-0) opened the 2023 season with a 3-0, shutout win over RIT (0-1) on Friday evening at Tiger Stadium.

The 'Jackets held RIT to just one shot in the first half, which Grace Kuropatkin saved in the fourth minute. However, UR got off just four shots of their own, none of which made it into the back of the net.

A volley from Claire Grover in the 19th minute forced Emily Sanchez's first of four saves, while less than a minute later, Maya Bravo forced Sanchez to make another.

In the 26th minute, Lauren Blanch nearly found the back of the net, forcing yet another Sanchez save, while Mia McGinty sent one wide in the 34th minute.

Rochester and RIT though, would head into halftime scoreless, but the 'Jackets would quickly break the scoreless tie just over three minutes into the second half.

After Kuropatkin made another save, this time on Rachel Marriott's shot 2:02 into the second half, McGinty found Grover on a cross into the box to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.

And a little over 15 minutes later, Bravo made it a 2-0 lead with an unassisted score, following a pair of UR corner kicks.

Then in the 75th minute, Blanch put the game out of reach for the Tigers, finding the back of the net off Megan Pung's assist to make it a 3-0 UR lead.

After tallying just three corner kicks in the first half, UR turned up its offense in the second, converted three of its five shots into goals and tallied eight corners, compared to just two for RIT.

Kuropatkin would make two more second-half saves on shots by Emma Pedro to keep the 'Jackets out front, 1-0, in the 52nd minute, finishing off the shutout as Rochester's defense held RIT without a shot the rest of the way.

Blanch led the 'Jackets with four shots, three of which were on goal while Bravo and Grover each tallied two. As a team, UR outshot RIT, 9-4, and had 11 corners compared to just two for the Tigers.

Defensively, Kuropatkin made four saves, earning the win with all 90 minutes in goal.

The Yellowjackets next host 21st-ranked SUNY Cortland in their 2023 home opener on Monday, Sept. 4 at 12:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
