Two Seniors Score in Field Hockey Senior Day Win

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – A pair of seniors, Delainey Hebble and Zoe Conomikes, scored in each half to lead the #24 University of Rochester field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Oswego State on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Hebble and Conomikes, along with six other members of the class of 2024, celebrated Senior Day prior to the start of the contest on Saturday.

The win pushes Rochester's record back to .500, sitting at 4-4 on the year. Oswego drops to 3-6 with the loss.

After the opening quarter, the Yellowjackets held a 3-0 lead in shots, with all three attempts coming in a short span during the middle of the period. Maeve Fogarty's attempt was blocked while Bella Militi followed with two attempts, one blocked and one just wide of the cage.

Oswego started the second quarter strong with an offense push in the 18th minute. Ellie Kazel and Bryleigh Beauchat had shots in close saved by UR's Kara Houston, while a third chance from the center of the circle by Kacie Simzer was slipped wide of the right post.

The Yellowjackets answered with a flurry of chances seven minutes later. A fast break chance off a Hebble outlet pass led to Militi streaking into the circle from the left side. Her first attempt at stuffing in a shot at the left post was stopped by KY Philips in the cage. Hebble's follow up attempt saw Philips poke the ball away, with Militi again getting the third shot of the rush saved away.

Hebble then broke through with the game's opening goal at the 28:23 mark of the first half. Off a penalty corner pass from teammate Kayla Ballas, Hebble struck a low shot from the top of the circle towards the right post. The ball evaded traffic in front and snuck into the back of the net for her first score of the season.

Eight minutes into the second half, the UR lead doubled on a similar play on a penalty corner. Fogarty inserted a pass to Conomikes just left of center along the edge of the circle. The senior blasted a hard shot inside the left post, marking her third tally of the 2023 campaign.

During the fourth quarter, Rochester's Militi was denied five minutes in by a solid play by Oswego defender Maddie Pflume. After back-to-back chances by Fogarty and Vivianna Arnold from five yards were saved by Philips, Militi flipped a backhand shot on goal towards the left post where Pflume was waiting for a defensive save.

Less than five minutes later off a penalty corner shot by Hebble, Militi had a deflection slip past the Oswego keeper, but was again stuffed by a Lakers defender, with Erin Schaefer make the defensive save at the right post.

Rochester's defense combined to hold Oswego to just one shot in the second half, and four total in the game. The Yellowjackets ended up with a 21-4 shot advantage and 9-1 lead in penalty corners.

Prior to the game, UR seniors, Hebble, Elisabeth Sidorski, Jodie Zeng, Arnold, Militi, Ballas, Conomikes and Mara Heppard were joined by their families and honored for their commitment and dedication to the field hockey program with a Senior Day celebration.

Up next, the Yellowjackets take to the road for a contest at Nazareth University on Wednesday evening.
