ROCHESTER, NY – University of Rochester men's tennis won their second-straight contest to open the spring season, defeating the RIT Tigers, 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Midtown Athletic Center.
Three Yellowjackets:
Rahul Ravi,
Krish Vennam and
Ethan Samora, were double winners in Rochester's second-straight win, as UR took all three doubles matches before taking five of the six singles, with the lone defeat being due to a withdrawal.
Josh Chu and
David Riccio picked up UR's first win in doubles action at the No. 3 spot, topping RIT's Anthony Lounder and Verosh Jayanetti, 8-3. Ravi and Vennam then made it 2-0 UR with their 8-5 win at No. 2-doubles, topping Luke Weber and Joel Pho, before Samora and
Kai Yuminaga eked out the win at the one spot on a tiebreak: 8-7 (7-3), over the Tigers' Grahith Movva and Alec Turcotte.
Up 3-0, Vennam picked up Rochester's first win in singles action, defeating Grahith at the No. 1 spot: 6-1, 6-1, before Ravi clinched the victory, topping Jayanetti at No. 3 singles: 6-3, 6-2.
At the four spot,
Kavin Shukla picked up another win for the 'Jackets, topping Pho: 6-2, 6-2, while the Tigers earned their lone win of the night, as Yuminaga was forced to retire at No. 2 singles after Turcotte won the first game via tiebreak: 7-6 (7-4).
Kei Ogawa and Samora then wrapped up Rochester's day with two more wins, finishing off the Yellowjackets' 8-1 win with victories at No. 5 and 6 singles. Samora defeated Gabriel Escobar: 6-4, 6-2, while Ogawa earned the win over Lounder: 6-4, 6-1.
Rochester moves to 2-0 with the win, while RIT drops to 2-1 with the loss.
UR next hosts Colgate University on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2:00 p.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
