Rochester Falters at Home Against Division I Colgate

The University of Rochester women's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2024 spring season on Sunday, falling by a 9-0 score to Division I Colgate University at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Colgate's victory moves the Raiders to 5-3 on the season, while Rochester drops to 2-1 in the early part of their spring campaign.

The visitors came into the match after a tough 4-3 win at home against Marist on Saturday and used that momentum to their advantage, sweeping through doubles play for the early lead.

UR's Neha Dania and Lauren Kallas fell at third doubles by an 8-2 score to Eliza Podlas and Avery Isaac. Colgate's #1 team of Sophia Montero and Amelia Galin made it 2-0 Raiders with an 8-4 win over Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam.

The final doubles match at number two was the closest point in the entire day, with UR's Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor being edged out in a tiebreak by Jordan Ben-Shmuel and Gigi Bohan. The Colgate duo won 8-7 (5).

In singles, Podlas earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Toor at number three to put Colgate up 4-0 on the scoreboard. Addie Eklund followed by clinching the match in a straight set win (6-2, 6-0) at number two against Karnam.

UR's Libby had some success at the top spot in the order against Montero, but the Colgate player emerged with a 6-4, 7-6 (0) win to continue the shutout. At four, Bohan won 6-3, 6-4 over Kallas.

The final two matches were played as super-sets. Dania was defeated 8-1 by Sasha Herman at number five and Isaac topped Dron 8-2 at six.

Up next for Rochester is another home matchup against Ithaca College on Saturday at 10 am.
