CANTON, NY – The University of Rochester women's track and field team won its second straight Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, finishing off a solid two days at the St. Lawrence University Newell Field House.
Rochester earned three event wins on Saturday and wrapped up the competition with 173 team points, outpointing second place Ithaca College by nearly 20 points. The runner-up Bombers finished with 154.5 points while RIT closed out the top-3 with 105 points.
The Yellowjacket winners on Saturday were senior
Ashley Heffernan in the 60 meters, junior
Megan Bell in the 800 meters and junior
Deziree Garrick in the weight throw. In addition, senior
Madeline O'Connell brought home hardware by being named the Co-Track Performer of the Meet and the Field Performer of the Meet in the women's competition.
Heffernan earned a total of three top-2 results, earning All-Liberty League praise three times on Saturday. Her win in the 60 meters saw the senior sprint to a 7.84 second time.
Earlier in the day, Heffernan was runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles with a 9.05 second time. Her busy day concluded later on in the high jump where the senior wrapped up that event also in second, clearing 1.58 meters. All three results were All-Atlantic Regional qualifying marks, with the high jump result being a new personal-best for the senior.
Garrick's victory in the weight throw led a group of three scorers among the top-4 finishers. Garrick won with an AARTFC qualifying mark of 15.22 meters. Teammate
Cora Rose ended third with a personal-best toss of 14.41 meters, while
Liv Ilasz finished right behind in fourth place, posting a 14.18 meter distance.
Heffernan had three top-2 results on Saturday.
In the 800 meters, Bell finished with a time of 2:15.83, winning a tight race by less than a second in front of the runner-up finisher. Bell's time qualified her for regionals next week and scored ten points towards the Yellowjackets team score.
O'Connell's Saturday featured a pair of top-3 results helping in the seniors cause to the multiple awards. She finished second in the 200 meters in 25.26 seconds and added a third place result in the 60 meters, running 7.98 seconds. Both were regional qualifying performances. During day one, O'Connell claimed the title in both the pole vault and 400 meters for Rochester.
First-year
Nora Chen was also a multiple scorer on day two for Rochester, finishing on the podium in three events. Chen placed sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.58 seconds), seventh in the 200 meters (26.46 seconds) and anchored UR's 4x400 meter relay team that finished in second place.
The relay group also included
Julia Largett,
Raquella Casserino and
Maya Hatch and finished in 4:03.92 to earn Second Team All-Liberty League praise.
During the triple jump senior
Alyssa Hoogs wrapped up the competition in third place with an AARTFC qualifying performance of 10.84 meters.
Ashleigh Barrett also scored for UR, recording an eighth place jump of 10.30 meters.
UR's top two finishers in the 3000 meters were both regional qualifiers as well.
Sennett Turner finished fifth in 10:17.91, while
Ellie Ponko finished 11th in a fast event, clocking in at 10:31.85. Both times were big PR's for the distance runners.
Rochester's next meet during the tail end of the indoor season is the All-Atlantic Regional Championships, set for next Friday and Saturday at Nazareth University.
