PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester women's track & field team claimed a regional title and a second-place result on the opening day of the 2023-24 All-Atlantic Region Indoor Track & Field Championships (AARTFC), hosted by Nazareth University, at the Golisano Training Center.
Madeline O'Connell broke the 4.00m mark for the second time in her career, surpassing the 4.03 bar on the pole vault to win the regional title. O'Connell was the lone competitor to surpass 3.69m, finishing first in the event to earn first place.
UR added another top-three finish in the 5,000 meters, as
Sennett Turner crossed the finish line in 17:37.19s, a new personal best and a top-50 mark in NCAA Division III to finish second overall.
The Yellowjackets also had three competitors in the shot put, with
Deziree Garrick pacing UR's trio with an eighth-place finish and a 12.18m throw.
Cora Rose finished three spots behind Garrick in 11th with a 12.00m throw, while Aimee Ozer finished 29th, throwing the shot put 10.39m.
In the pentathlon,
Julia Largett wrapped up the five events with a 12th-place finish, setting a new personal-best score of 2,781 points. The junior set PRs in both the 60-meter hurdles (10.07s) and the long jump (4.91m) and recorded her best finish in the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:26.75, good for 2nd.
Following the opening day of competition, Rochester sits in seventh place with 19 points, with SUNY Geneseo leading with pack with 28 points. Rowan and Utica round out the top three, with both the Profs and Pioneers earning 23 points on the first day of competition.
