ORLANDO, FL – The University of Rochester tennis team took five of six single matches and earned a 6-3 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Sunday at the USTA National Campus, opening the teams spring break trip in Florida.
Graduate student
Kai Yuminaga secured the match clinching point with a 6-2, 6-4 over Charles Norman at the #2 singles spot for Rochester (4-1).
Coast Guard (0-2) took the early lead, winning two of three doubles matches. The number one pair of Myles Decoste and Norman, a nationally-ranked squad, won 8-1 over Yuminaga and
Ethan Samora for the opening point.
The Bears went up 2-0 with an 8-5 win from Sean Dreher and Benjamin Bonetto at number two against UR's
Krish Vennam and
Rahul Ravi.
Rochester avoided the doubles sweep though, winning a tight matchup at three. UR's
Kavin Shukla and
Josh Chu emerged with an 8-7 (6) win over Brendan Love and Logan De Los Santos.
The last doubles win seemed to give UR some momentum heading into singles play.
David Riccio leveled the match at 2-2 with a straight set win (6-0, 6-4) at six over Love.
Shukla then became UR's only double-winner of the day with his 6-4, 6-1 at number four against Bonetto, moving Rochester in front 3-2 on the team scoreboard.
Kei Ogawa followed with another singles win for the 'Jackets, topping De Los Santos 6-1, 6-3 at five to pull Rochester within one of clinching the match.
While that was happening, Dreher added another win to his total on Sunday, defeating Ravi 6-4, 6-1 at number three, keeping Coast Guard alive in the match.
That ended up being a short-lived thought though, as Yuminaga was in the process of defeating Norman for the clinching point.
Rochester's Vennam ended up outlasting Decoste in three sets to close out the match. The UR junior won 6-2, 2-6 and 10-4 in the super tie-break.
UR's spring trip continues on Monday morning with a matchup against Division II Bentley University.
