A nationally-ranked squad from Vassar College proved too much for the host University of Rochester women's tennis team on Sunday, with the visitors coming away with an 8-1 win at the Goergen Athletic Center.
Â
The Brewers, ranked #33 in the latest Division III poll, improve to 7-3 on the season, while Rochester falls to 3-4 in the dual match campaign.
Â
Rochester's lone win on the day came from the top doubles combo of
Josephine Libby and
Sanjana Karnam. The UR team won by an 8-4 score over Macey Dowd and Erin McCusker in a match that featured the top two singles players as well from each squad.
Â
Vassar jumped out to the lead in doubles, winning two of the three matches and continued its strong play into singles, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.
Â
At second doubles, UR's
Jaclyn Dron and
Jasmin Toor battled to an 8-4 loss against Iris Li and Maddie Kirby. In the three spot, Vassar's Ananya Krishnan and Elyse Duley were 8-1 winners against Rochester's

Â
As play turned to singles, Libby had the most success among the UR players in a battle between two nationally-ranked individual players in her and McCusker. Libby opened with a 6-4 win in the opening set and forced a tiebreak in set two, but McCusker edged that one out 7-6 (7-4). In the third, McCusker, the #14 player in Division III won another close affair, winning 10-8 to rally and win the match.
Â
At two, Karnam fell to a regionally-ranked foe in Dowd, 6-1, 6-0, leading a charge of straight set wins over the remaining matches.
