CLINTON, NY – For the second straight day, the University of Rochester women's tennis team dropped a match against a NESCAC opponent, falling on Saturday morning 8-1 to 18th-ranked Amherst College at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.
The loss pushes UR's record on the season to 3-6 overall, while the Mammoths improve to 4-2 in dual match competition.
Amherst jumped out to the early lead with a pair of 8-0 wins at second and third doubles. Rochester's top doubles team of
Sanjana Karnam and
Josephine Libby were 8-6 winners over Deliala Friedman and Lily Dounchis, swiping a point to close out doubles play, earning the only 'Jacket victory of the day.
After leading 2-1 following doubles, the Mammoths were able to earn victories in the first three matches during singles to clinch the match. Regionally ranked Sophie Diop opened the singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over UR's Karnam at number two.
At the three spot, Dounchis won 6-3, 6-1 over
Jasmin Toor. That set up Amherst's Amy Cui to earn the clinching point against Libby at number one, winning 6-4, 6-4.
Amherst kept the momentum throughout the remainder of the match, earning three more straight set wins at positions four, five and six on the ladder.
Up next, Rochester returns home for another regional battle, hosting William Smith College next Wednesday in the Goergen Athletic Center.
