In a marathon match which saw four of six singles matches go a full three sets, visiting William Smith College emerged victorious by a 6-3 score over the University of Rochester women's tennis team on Wednesday evening at the Goergen Athletic Center.
UR captain
Josephine Libby finished Wednesday's match as a double-winner, while
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam added one win each.
Rochester's record falls to 3-7 on the season, with William Smith moving to 4-7 in 2024.
In doubles, UR's top team of Libby and Karnam, freshly ranked #7 in the Northeast region in Wednesday's latest ITA rankings, got things off to a solid start for the Yellowjackets, winning 8-1 over Isabelle Goings-Perrot and Haley Levine.
The Herons responded though with a pair of 8-5 wins to take the 2-1 lead after doubles.
Natalie Haythorn and Julia Pida were winners at number two doubles over
Jaclyn Dron and Toor, while William Smith's Marin Montagne and Maddy Buck posted the same win over
Sahithi Mathukumilli and
Neha Dania.
With things shifting to singles, Libby, also ranked regionally in singles, quickly evened the overall score with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Levin at the top spot in the lineup.
Toor made it two wins in a row for the Yellowjackets, giving Rochester a 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 over Haythorn.
The rest of the matches all went three sets, with the visiting Herons swiping all four matches.
At two, Goings-Perrot battled Karnam, with the Herons player starting things with a 6-3 win. After Karnam rebounded with a 6-2 win in set two, Goings-Perrot edged Karnam in the third set by a 7-5 score to level the overall match at 3-3.
It was a similar match at the four spot, with Mae Kellersman edging Dania. After Kellersman won the opening set 6-4, Dania won the second also 6-4. In the deciding third set, a 6-3 score went to Kellersman to pull William Smith up on the team scoreboard.
UR's Mathukumilli won the opening set at number six by a 6-2 score, looking to keep UR alive in the match, but her opponent Grace Mangna responded with 6-4 and 6-0 wins over the final two sets to earn the clinching point.
The final match was at number five between Montagne and Dron. Dron opened with a 6-4 win and narrowly was defeated 7-6 (7-2) in the second. During the third set, Montagne completed the comeback with a 6-4 win to reach the final score of 6-3 in favor of William Smith.
Up next, the Yellowjackets head to Ohio for a two-match weekend against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday and John Carroll University on Sunday.
