'Jackets Bested by UAA Rival CWRU

MAYFIELD, OH – The University of Rochester women's tennis team battled a familiar conference foe on Saturday, falling in non-conference action against Case Western Reserve University at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

The host Spartans (12-3), ranked #11 in the latest Division III poll, came away with a 9-0 victory over the Yellowjackets (3-8), who were taking on their fourth nationally ranked opponent in nine Division III matches so far this season.

Case Western Reserve breezed through wins at second and third doubles to quickly grab the 2-0 lead on Saturday, with the sweep being completed by Hannah Kassaie and Radha Patel at number one. The CWRU pair bested Sanjana Karnam and Josephine Libby, a Northeast regionally ranked duo, by an 8-3 score.

In singles, the top of the lineup matchup featured Libby against Kassaie, a top-billed meeting between two nationally ranked players. Kassaie, the #5 player in Division III, emerged with a big win, posting a 6-1, 6-0 score over Libby, a former All-American.

Karnam enjoyed some success in her match at number two against Anna Kan, but the Spartans earned the point after Kan won 6-4, 6-1.

Patel, another Case nationally ranked singles player, sat at number three in the lineup and earned a 6-1, 6-1 over Jasmin Toor. The Spartans continued their strong play when Pallavi Goculdas won 6-1, 6-0 at number four against Neha Dania.

In the five spot, Chloe Ku blanked Jaclyn Dron in straight sets, while Katherine Wang finished off the overall sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sahithi Mathukumilli.

Rochester gets right back on the courts on Sunday afternoon, taking on John Carroll University.
