Singles Sweep Lifts Yellowjackets Past Saints

The University of Rochester men's tennis team earned a clean sweep of doubles, winning all six matches to post a 7-2 victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.

All six singles wins came of the straight-set variety and UR's Kavin Shukla ended up leading the Yellowjackets (8-3) by finishing as a double-winner.

The match started with Shukla and David Ricco opening doubles with an 8-5 win for Rochester.

St. Lawrence (7-8) closed out doubles play with back-to-back wins though, taking the 2-1 lead. At two Cole Hamilton and Ben Moolman won 8-5 over Krish Vennam and Ethan Samora. During the #1 match, SLU's Adam Heilbronner and Broderick Pinto won 8-6, edging Kai Yuminaga and Rahul Ravi.

Rochester opened singles play with the top four in the lineup all posting 6-2 first set victories. Vennam finished off Heilbronner at #1 with a 6-1 win to level the team match at two.

Shukla followed suit at number three, defeating Hamilton 6-2 in the second set for his sweep and Samora put UR in front 4-2 with a 6-3 win in the final set at four against Moolman.

At two, Yuminaga earned the match clinching point against Pinto, winning 7-6 in a closely contested second set, needing extra points to win the tiebreak 9-7.

Continuing the strong singles play, Ravi blanked John Hill-Edgar 6-0 in the first and won 6-4 in the second to sweep his match at five. Kei Ogawa made it six points in a row for UR after defeating Aidan Baracao 6-2, 6-2 at the six spot in the order.
