PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's lacrosse picked up its fourth-straight Liberty League win, defeating the Saint Lawrence University Saints, 15-10, on a windy Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium. With the win, the Yellowjackets move to 8-4 (5-2 LL) on the year, while the Saints fall to 3-9 (2-4 LL).
Saint Lawrence got on the scoreboard first with a pair of unassisted goals just shy of the 10-minute mark, taking advantage of an early yellow card on the Yellowjackets. But a little over a minute-and-a-half after Phoebe Spaeth put the Saints up 2-0,
Jenna Ufberg broke the seal for the Yellowjackets off
Emily Schillinger's assist to pull Rochester within a score.
The Saints' 2-1 advantage would hold for much of the opening quarter, with Ellie Camp's goal at the 4:20 mark extending SLU's lead to 3-1, but Rochester would answer with two scores of their own, leveling the score at three-all after one.
Heidi Donovan struck first for UR off another Schillinger assist to cut the deficit to one with 3:40 to play, and after Ufberg forced a Saint Lawrence turnover with 1:11 remaining in the period,
Alyssa Gorny got on the scoreboard with 53 seconds left to send the two sides into the second quarter all knotted at three.
And while the Saints again scored first to start the second, this time the Yellowjackets would answer with three in a row to take a 6-4 lead.
Talia Feldman leveled the score at 4-4 off
Gracie Giannettino's assist with 11:00 left in the first half, before Giannettino added another assist to her tally, finding
Anna Rogers to make it a 5-4 lead.
Rogers then added another, this time off Schillinger's assist, extending UR's lead to 6-4 with 8:52 left in the second before Neve Ley added another for the visitors, sending Rochester into the locker room with a 6-5 lead.
The Yellowjackets quickly extended their lead to start the third, going up 8-5 on Crochiere's score from Giannettino, and
Kassi Boehl's free-position goal. After the Saints won the opening draw of the second half,
Ava Saffren saved Bella Hillman's shot, and the 'Jackets took it the other way, going up 7-5 on Crochiere's goal at the 13:39 mark of the third.
Then after another turnover from the Saints a few minutes later, Boehl netted the free-position attempt and found the back of the net to make it a three-goal lead.
However, the Saints would answer with three straight of their own, all coming in just over a minute to tie the score at eight-all. Ley found Kelsey Roth after another UR yellow card to make it 8-6, before the Saints took advantage of another advantage-opportunity with Jessica LaPlaca's unassisted goal at the 8:51 mark of the third.
Roth then added another just shy of the eight-minute mark to pull St. Lawrence even with Rochester, 8-8, and the Saints then won the ensuing draw control, looking to take their first lead since early on in the second quarter.
But the Yellowjacket defense forced a turnover, and a possession later, Saffren made one of her eight saves, preventing the Saints from retaking the lead.
Then out of a timeout, Crochiere scored back-to-back free-position goals, putting the Yellowjackets up for good. Crochiere's free-position score at the 4:14 mark of the third gave UR a 9-8 lead, before the senior quickly won the draw and scored again, extending Rochester's lead to 10-8 at the end of the third.
The Saints would pull back within one to start the fourth, as Morgan Arakelian found Neve Ley, but the Yellowjackets scored the next three, and five of the final six goals of the quarter to put the game out of reach.
After another turnover caused by Crochiere, the 'Jackets got things going offensively, with Rogers again finding the back of the net. Schillinger fired in the first shot, hitting the post, and on the rebound, Rogers bounced it in for the score, helping Rochester retake a two-goal lead with 6:04 to play.
UR then struck quickly for two more with under five minutes to play, as Ufberg and Gorny helped extend Rochester's lead to 13-9, their largest lead so far.
With under three minutes to play, St. Lawrence found the back of the net one last time, but Gorny added two more goals over the final two-and-a-half minutes, helping finish off the 'Jackets' 15-10 victory.
Offensively, Gorny tallied a game-high four goals, while Crochiere and Rogers each scored three. Giannettino led the Yellowjackets with four assists, while Schillinger tallied three.
Crochiere also led the 'Jackets with a team-high six draw controls, four groundballs and three caused turnovers, tying for a team-high in caused turnovers and groundballs with
Abbey Smith. In goal for UR, Saffren played all 60 minutes and made eight saves.
Rochester will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, April 14 with another conference matchup against RPI inside Fauver Stadium at 12:00 p.m.
