PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's lacrosse saw its four-game win streak snapped as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Engineers defeated the Yellowjackets, 13-11, on Sunday afternoon inside Edwin Fauver Stadium.
After an early save by
Ava Saffren, the Yellowjackets got the scoring started, taking advantage of a player deficit after the Engineers picked up two green cards to score their first goal.
Emily Schillinger found
Alyssa Gorny, and the sophomore found the back of the net to give UR a 1-0 lead with 10:41 left in the first.
Just over three minutes later, Schillinger found the back of the net herself to double Rochester's lead, with back-to-back unassisted scores by Schillinger and
Grace Crochiere helping UR jump out to a 3-0 lead with 6:12 to play in the first.
However, the Engineers responded minutes later with their first score, kick-starting a 5-0 run to take RPI's first lead of the afternoon. Ella Graff's free-position goal at the 2:56 mark of the first quarter got the Engineers on the scoreboard, while Emily Speck cut the deficit to one with her goal just over 10 seconds later.
Graff then would add another just shy of the minute mark to send Rochester and RPI into the second quarter all tied up at three, where the Engineers would score the first two goals of the period to open a 5-3 lead.
Audrey Silverman made it a 5-3 advantage for the Engineers with her advantage goal at the 11:35 mark of the third, and while UR won the ensuing draw control, Jenny Canfield saved Gorny's shot, one of her six saves on the afternoon, to keep RPI in front by a pair.
Rochester though, got a stop on RPI's next possession, with Graff's free-position shot sailing high, and then got going again offensively with
Kassi Boehl's unassisted score with 9:24 to play.
Schillinger then added another at the 6:15 mark of the second to level the score at five-all, but the Engineers would add two more before the halftime buzzer, going up 7-5 on Lauren DeLeo's score with 2:46 left in the half.
The Yellowjackets would get one back before the horn, with Gorny quickly answering DeLeo's score with one of her own, and UR headed into the locker room trailing by just one, 7-6.
UR and RPI traded goals to start the third, as
Anna Rogers tied things up at seven with 11:29 left in the third, while Megan Shay helped the Engineers retake a one-goal lead at the 5:10 mark of the period
This time though, the Yellowjackets would not only answer to tie but would take their first lead since the opening quarter, with Boehl again igniting Rochester's offense for the first of two scores.
Gracie Giannettino found Boehl for the equalizer, leveling the score at 8-8 with 2:35 left in the third, and after Gorny won the draw control, Giannettino found the back of the net herself to give UR a 9-8 advantage.
However, RPI again answered just before the end of the period, tying the score at nine-all with 17 seconds left, and the Engineers kept things rolling into the fourth, scoring the first three goals of the final stanza.
Down 12-9, Rochester got back on the scoreboard at the 9:15 mark of the fourth with Schillinger's third goal of the game, but the Engineers were quick to answer with Silverman scoring after Shay won the draw.
The 'Jackets then looked to advantage and cut into the Engineers' three-goal lead, but despite two failed clears by RPI, the Yellowjackets couldn't take advantage, with three shots getting saved, blocked and going wide.
Defensively, the 'Jackets held firm, keeping the Engineers' lead at just three as Saffren added two more saves to her tally, but Rochester's offense would sputter down the stretch aside from a late goal from Gorny, and the Engineers would escape Fauver Stadium with a 13-11 victory.
The Yellowjackets fall to 8-5 (5-3 LL) with the loss, while RPI moves to 4-6 (3-3 LL) with the win.
Offensively, Gorny and Schillinger led UR with three goals apiece, while Crochiere, Giannettino and Schillinger each tallied an assist.
On the draw, Crochiere tallied a team-high four draw controls and added a game-high six ground balls, while defensively,
Abbey Smith caused three turnovers. And in goal for Rochester, Saffren made nine saves.
The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back when they host Hamilton in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 17 at 6:00 p.m.
