Women’s Tennis Drops Nail-Biter to SLU

University of Rochester women's tennis fell in a closely-contested match to the St. Lawrence University Saints, 5-4, on Saturday morning side the Goergen Athletic Center.

Rochester (4-10) and St. Lawrence (10-6) would each take one of the first two doubles matches, with Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor topping SLU's Elena Styliades and Abigail Sicuranza at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, while Yvette and Ariane Karera defeated Sahithi Mathukumilli and Neha Dania at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.

Then at the No. 1-doubles spot, Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam, the No. 7-ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region, went to a tiebreak against Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and Molly Jespersen, but the Saints took it, 8-7 (7-2), to go up 2-1 after doubles play.

In singles play, the Saints grabbed early wins at the No. 2 and 4 spots to go up 4-1 on the 'Jackets. Yvette Karera topped Dron at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Jespersen defeated Karnam at the two spot, 6-0, 6-1.

And while Meredith Macey came up with the clincher for St. Lawrence at No. 6 singles, edging Mathukumilli, 6-3, 6-2, the Yellowjackets would battle back over the next three matches to pull within a point on the final scoreboard.

Dania picked up Rochester's first win in singles play at the No. 5 spot, defeating Maya Stepic, 6-4, 6-0. Then at No. 3 singles, after needing a third set to decide things, Toor topped Ariane Karera in that third set, 6-4, to take the match: 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, pulling UR within two points.

Then to wrap things up, #33/#20 Josephine Libby scored a big win over Aksdal-Jansen, regionally-ranked No. 15, at the No. 1 spot, defeating the sophomore in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

The Yellowjackets will wrap up their weekend with their Senior Day matchup against No. 37 NYU on Sunday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m.
