ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – A high-powered University of Chicago lineup, ranked #4 in Division III, defeated the University of Rochester women's tennis team 5-0 on Friday morning at Sanlando Park in the quarterfinal round of the UAA Tennis Championships.
The win moves Chicago (16-1) into the semifinal round on Saturday, while Rochester (5-12) will play in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Chicago's lineup on Friday boasted the #1 doubles team in Division III and a top-10 doubles team at the number two spot. That second doubles pair of Shianna Guo and Sylwia Mikos were 8-0 winners over
Neha Dania and
Sahithi Mathukumilli to kickstart the match for the Maroons.
At third doubles, the UC team of Sarena Biria and Lauren Khou earned an 8-2 win against
Jasmin Toor and
Jaclyn Dron to make it 2-0.
Division III's top team of Rena Lin and Oliwia Mikos then completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at the top slot against UR's
Josephine Libby and
Sanjana Karnam.
The Chicago singles lineup was just as strong, with Lin, S. Mikos, Brooke Pedersen and Guo all being either nationally or regionally ranked.
Chicago's Biria opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six over Mathukumilli before Pedersen won by the same score at four against Dron to clinch the overall match.
UR's Libby took two games against Lin, the #23 player in the country, in a first set loss, seeing the most success for the Yellowjackets in singles.
On Saturday in the consolation round, Rochester will square off at 12:30 pm with the loser of the 4th-5th seed matchup between Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon.
