MAYFIELD, OH – The University of Rochester men's tennis team faced its most difficult test so far this season on Saturday evening, falling to 4th-ranked Case Western Reserve University by a 9-0 score at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
The two teams are UAA conference rivals and may meet up later this month at the conference championships down in Florida, but on Saturday, the Spartans (18-5) earned their 18thwin of the season in the non-conference sweep. Rochester falls to 6-3, dropping just its second match against Division III competition this season.
UR saw the Spartans jump on top early with three wins in doubles. The Yellowjackets top team of
Kai Yuminaga and
Rahul Ravi battled the #13 team in Division III, falling 8-2 to Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza.
At number two,
Krish Vennam and
Ethan Samora dropped an 8-3 decision to Daniel French and Sahil Dayal, while at three, CWRU's Ansh Shah and Anmay Devaraj won another 8-2 match over
David Riccio and
Kavin Shukla.
In singles, Vennam hung tough with the #6 player in the country in Ajay Mahenthiran at the number one spot, but ultimately was beaten in straight sets, falling 7-5, 6-2.
Aduru, regionally ranked #5 player, played at number two against the Yellowjackets Yuminaga and came away with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Another Case ranked player, Michael Sutanto edged Shukla at three 6-3, 6-4.
At the four spot, Ravi was dropped 6-1, 6-2 by Shah, with Case's Casey Hishinuma, a nationally ranked singles player winning 6-2, 6-2 over Samora at five. Maza wrapped up the win with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over UR's Riccio at the number six spot.
Rochester continues its Ohio trip on Sunday with a matchup against John Carroll University.
