ITHACA, NY – In a series of racing against three other conference foes, the University of Rochester rowing team got in some key action on the water as the team begins to approach the later stages of the spring season.
UR competed on Saturday at the Cayuga Inlet in a series of dual races against host Ithaca College, RIT and William Smith College, all of whom are ranked in the latest Division III Coaches Poll.
The action began in the morning with Rochester's varsity eight taking on William Smith. The Yellowjackets ended with a time of 8:02.4 out of lane two, while the Herons ended up taking the race with a 7:41.6 time in the heat.
Racing shifted to the 2nd varsity eight, with Rochester's women earning its lone win of the day against the Herons. UR's 2V finished in 8:24.1, edging out William Smith by just over three seconds, as the Herons clocked at 8:27.8.
Both the 1V and 2V boats battled Ithaca later in the morning racing before high winds forced the late cancellation of action. UR's 1V lost to Ithaca with a time of 8:28.4, while the 2V rowed to a time of 9:14.2 in the second race. Ithaca's top boat crossed the finish in 7:53.8 and its 2V posted an 8:28.5 time.
Also getting to compete was UR's 3V/Novice boat against William Smith. That team posted a time of 9:25.9, ending in second to the Herons 3V squad that finished at 8:53.8.
UR now gets a couple weeks off to prepare for the championship season, which begins on April 20 at the New York State Collegiate Championships.
