HENRIETTA, NY – The 22nd-ranked University of Rochester men's soccer team earned its second straight victory after scoring a season-high three goals in a 3-0 shutout win over crosstown rival RIT on Tuesday evening at Tiger Stadium.
Rochester (2-1-1) got a pair of first half goals from
Kamal Ibrahim and
Jeremiah Anandarajah with
Johnny Makula providing a late insurance tally in the fading minutes of the second half.
Goalkeeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo picked up a shutout by making four saves, the 21st solo clean sheet of his career, moving into second place all-time in Rochester men's soccer history.
UR's first good scoring chance of the game came in the 11th minute, when a header cross from
Milos Bisenic came into the box where Ibrahim one-timed it on goal. Tiger keeper Jason Trapp was there to make the point-blank save and keep the game scoreless.
Five minutes later, Ibrahim broke the shutout with his second goal in as many games for the Yellowjackets. Some solid passing from
Ryan Szymczyk and Makula easily moved the ball up the midfield, with Makula's swing pass finding a streaking Ibrahim up the right side.
The UR grad student them outran the defense and deposited his shot into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the half, a foul gave Rochester a set piece in a dangerous position.
Ashton Prescott stepped up and took the kick, finding Anandarajah in the box for the goal, boosting the lead to 2-0.
RIT (0-4) got its first shot on frame in the early part of the second half, with Roman Mironenko's left-footed blast from outside the box being easily corralled by Lupica-Tondo.
Ibrahim nearly netted his second of the night in the 57th minute when he was served a perfect ball at the crease, but another point-blank save by Trapp kept the UR lead at two.
In the closing minutes of the contest, Makula notched his second score of the season. After
Tyler Moran sent a strong, curling ball into the box, Makula settled the ball around a defender and slipped his shot past the keeper for the 3-0 lead.
Overall, Rochester held the lead in shots, 14-11, and corners, 3-2. Trapp finished with five saves in the loss for RIT. The game was an intense physical battle, with the teams combining for 24 fouls and nine total cards.
The next matchup for UR is set for Saturday, with the 'Jackets heading to Hobart College for a 2 pm contest.
