Moran’s Midfield Score Powers Men’s Soccer Past Hobart

GENEVA, NY – Senior Tyler Moran scored from midfield just two seconds into the second half, and that'd be all the Yellowjackets needed, as the 22nd-ranked University of Rochester men's soccer team defeated the Hobart College Statesmen, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Cozzens Field.

Despite being outshot, 15-7, on the afternoon, Rochester came away with the lone goal and victory against the Statesmen on Moran's shot from midfield just two seconds into the second period.

Moran caught Hobart goalkeeper Thomas Chyzowych too far out of the goal to start the second half, and fired the opening kickoff straight into the back of the net to give UR a 1-0 lead.

The Statesmen got the scoring chances started just over five minutes into the first, forcing the first of seven saves from Santino Lupica-Tondo on a shot from Luke Ryan.

Mikey Burke took UR's first shot and put UR's put shot on goal in the 10th minute, as Chyzowych notched his first of five saves for the home side. The Statesmen would then test the UR defense again in the 17th minute, but La Zai Outerbridge saw hits shot blocked while Lupica-Tondo saved Keegan Mulroony's attempt to keep things scoreless midway through the first half.

Frederick Madsen forced Lupica-Tondo to save another in the 30th minute, while Milos Bisenic's 31st-minute attempt sailed wide on the counterattack.

Things would remain scoreless as Chyzowych made another save on Pasquale Carusone's 43rd-minute shot, and the two sides remained deadlocked 0-0 as they headed into the locker room for the halftime break.

However, Moran would break the scoreless tie just two seconds into the second half, and the Yellowjackets would fend off the Statesmen attack the rest of the way.

Lupica-Tondo fended off an early second-half attempt from Griffin Patterson in the 48th minute and another from Matheus Souza in the 51st minute, while UR's defense drew the Statesmen offsides in the 49th minute.

Moran put another shot on goal at the 51:07 mark of the second, but this one Chyzowych saved.

In the 74th minute, Lupica-Tondo made another save, this time on another shot from Souza following a Hobart corner, and the graduate keeper would add another just a couple minutes later on Griffin Coutts' 78th-minute volley.

UR's defense blocked two more shots down the stretch of the second, while the 'Jackets' offense looked for another tally to put the game away. Rochester couldn't find the back of the net off a corner in the 87th minute, while Alessio Cristanetti-Walker's attempt at the 89:38 mark went wide.

A foul with just six seconds left on the clock though, gave UR a penalty kick. And while Chyzowych saved Kamal Ibrahim's attempt, the 'Jackets still walked away with the 1-0 victory.

No. 22 moves to 3-1-1 with the win, while the Statesmen remain winless at 0-3-2 with the loss.

Moran led the 'Jackets with three shots, while Ibrahim added two.

Lupica-Tondo played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves to post another clean sheet, moving him into a tie with Michael Peacock `10 for the most shutouts in program history.

Rochester next hosts St. John Fisher University on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
