PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – First-year
Johnny Makula put up the University of Rochester men's soccer team's lone goal of the day, as they finished off a 1-1 draw against Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester (4-1-2) had a strong offensive performance, putting up 22 shots on the day, while holding the Golden Knights (4-0-3) to just two.
In the games fifth minute, Clarkson's Jay Jezioro caught Rochester off guard early in the match, grabbing the 1-0 lead on the first shot of the contest. After a long pass up the field from teammate Remi Ufheil, Jezioro ripped a 28-yard turnaround volley over the outstretched arms of UR keeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo into the net.
The Yellowjackets tried to counter quickly, with shots from
Kamal Ibrahim and
Alessio Cristanetti-Walker getting on frame, but Clarkson keeper Carter Kladstrup was there for the saves.
Rochester nearly drew even in the 21st minute when
Milos Bisenic sent a curling pass into the box for a one-timer flick by Cristanetti-Walker, but Kladstrup again made the point blank save to keep UR off the board.
Moving into the second half, Clarkson's defense was the story of the day until Makula put UR on the board with a tap-in goal off assists from
Benjamin Kaufman and
Nick Swanger. This goal developed from midfield, as Kaufman sent a long ball into the Clarkson defensive third. A one-timer header pass from Swanger set up Makula perfectly at the edge of the box, with the rookie depositing it into the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The second half remained scoreless from this point on with Rochester having eleven second-half shots compared to Clarkson's zero.
Clarkson's Kladstrup was a thorn in Rochester's side, finishing with seven saves on 22 shots against. On the UR side, Lupica-Tondo finished with one save.
Cristanetti-Walker led the offensive charge for Rochester with five shots, closely followed by Ibrahim with four and Swanger with three.
Rochester will continue their season against SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday at 7:00 pm Fauver Stadium.
