The University of Rochester squash team got off to a quick start, winning both of the first two matches, but the visiting U.S. Naval Academy rallied to win each of the remaining contests to post a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Peter Lyman Squash Center.

Rochester closes out its first semester of matches with the loss, moving its record to 2-4 overall. Navy, who annually plays one of the nations busiest squash schedules, is now 15-0 on the year.

The Yellowjackets got off to an almost perfect start in wave number one, with the two, six and eight matches on court first. Junior co-captain Dhirren Rajarathinam got things going with a three-game sweep over Christian Graziano at the number two spot. URochester ended up winning that match 11-4, 11-8 and 11-8.

To keep the early momentum, sophomore Thomas Valderrama also earned a sweep at number six, topping Michael Tierney Jr 11-7, 11-5 and 11-2 to put the 'Jackets up 2-0.

In the final match of wave one, UR's Karim Moataz and Avinash Uppuluri battled to five games at number eight, with Uppuluri winning 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 11-1 and 11-9 to avoid the Rochester first wave sweep.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the remaining two waves were both sweeps by the Midshipmen, reaching the final score of 7-2 in favor of Navy.

During the second set of matches, Alexander Orr swept Arjith Mathew at number three 11-5, 11-7 and 14-12 to make it 2-2, and in the number five match Rochester's Kareem Azzam was forced to retire in set two, giving Navy another point towards the overall match.

It was another five-game affair at number nine between Rochester's Victor Xu and Ramsay Killinger, with Killinger emerging for the point 11-3, 10-12, 11-4, 6-11 and 11-5.

Three more competitive matches closed out the competition, but Navy won all three, two coming in three-game sweeps. At one, Gilberto Aceves Moreno dropped an 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 11-8 decision to Wenqing Tang.

Two sets needed extra points at number five between Van Inman-Benavente, but Andrew Ko won 12-10-, 11-6 and 12-10. The final match was at number seven, with Matthew Kang topping Preston Wu 11-9, 11-9 and 11-5.

The Yellowjackets are now off for the holiday break and return to action on January 16 with a home matchup against Franklin and Marshall College.
