Rochester Swipes Win Over RIT in Men’s Tennis

The University of Rochester men's tennis team held off a feisty squad from the Rochester Institute of Technology, winning 5-2 in non-league action at the Goergen Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Rochester moves to 2-1 on the young season, while RIT drops to 3-2 overall.
 
First-year Alan Wang was the lone double-winner in the match for the Yellowjackets, earning wins for the hosts at second doubles and second singles.
 
The Yellowjackets were able to secure the lone doubles point, taking two of three closely contested matches. At second doubles, Wang and Surya Rajamani were 6-3 winners over Luke Weber and Alec Turcotte.
 
In the first and third doubles contests, tiebreakers were needed in both matches, with the set score sitting tied 6-6. At one, the team of Grahith Movva and Christian Berko emerged with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Rahul Ravi and Josh Chu.
 
As that match was wrapping up, UR's Ethan Samora and Liam Rieger teamed up for a 7-6 (8-6) win of their own against Yu Tanimoto and Alexander Sinclair to put Rochester in front 1-0 overall.
 
In singles, a straight set win from Wang, winning 6-2, 6-2 at number two against Movva, put Rochester in front 2-0, with Kavin Shukla making it 3-0 after winning 6-4, 7-5 over Joel Pho at fourth singles.
 
The clinching point was earned by UR's Ravi at the number three position, with the junior winning 7-5, 6-2 against Turcotte.
 
A back-and-forth match at number one gave RIT its first point of the day, with Tanimoto outlasting Krish Vennam 4-6, 6-4 and 12-10 in a lengthy tie-breaking third set.
 
Rounding out the action was Andy Liu defeating Sinclair 6-2, 6-3 at five, with RIT's Tyler Mitrovic topping Joseph Xia 7-6 (7-2) and 6-1 for the final Tigers point on the day.
 
Rochester is right back in action on Sunday afternoon, heading on its first road trip of the season, playing at Division I Colgate at 3 pm.
