Strong Singles Play Leads to Win over St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY – After dropping the doubles point, the University of Rochester men's tennis team used some strong singles play to power past host St. Lawrence 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Newell Field House.
 
The Yellowjackets improve to 4-2 on the season with the victory, keeping its perfect mark (4-0) against Division III opponents going to start the year. St. Lawrence falls to 1-2 in the early part of the 2025 campaign.
 
In doubles, the host Saints secured the team point with wins at the first and second slots in the order. At one, Edvin Strandberg and John Hill-Edgar won 6-2 over Kavin Shukla and Alan Wang. The Saints took the point after Broderick Pinto and Jake David won 6-3 against Josh Chu and Andy Liu.
 
UR's third doubles team, Ethan Samora and Eitan Fay, salvaged a match win against Aidan Baracao and Charles Schepens, posting a 6-4 score.
 
With St. Lawrence up on the scoreboard 1-0, Rochester's Wang quickly evened up the match with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at second singles against Pinto.
 
At five, Liu earned a similar win, going 6-4, 6-1 in his straight-set victory against Baracao to move Rochester in front 2-1.
 
The next three matches all went the distance, needed three sets to decide a winner. At number three, Rahul Ravi edged Hill-Edgar, rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.
 
St. Lawrence stayed alive after Ryan Tingley topped Chu at the six slot, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
 
UR's clinching point came from senior captain Krish Vennam at the top spot in the order. Vennam won the opening set 6-3 before Standberg answered back with a 6-4 win in set two. In the deciding set, Vennam won 6-3, securing the overall match victory for the Yellowjackets.
 
The final match of the day was between Shukla and David at number four singles. Shukla earned a straight set win, defeating David 7-5, 6-1 to reach the final score.
 
After completing its three-match road trip on Sunday, the Yellowjackets return home next weekend for two matches, hosting Union and Hamilton at the Goergen Athletic Center.
