The University of Rochester men's tennis team started off its weekend strong, blanking visiting Union College 7-0 on Saturday afternoon action played at the Goergen Athletic Center.
UR moves to 5-2 on the season with the victory, its third win in a row. Union falls to 2-3 on the year.
The Yellowjackets were led by
Alan Wang and
Surya Rajamani who were the lone double-winners of the match. Both paired together for a 6-3, win at first doubles and later earned straight set wins in singles. Wang won at #2 6-4, 6-4 over Jesus Sosa and Rajamani won by the same score against Kode Shreyas at number six.
In doubles, Union got the opening match to go in its favor, with Solen Bellemare and Arhan Gupta winning 6-3 over
Josh Chu and
Ahaan Malhotra.
Rochester responded by winning the next two matches though, securing the team doubles point. Wang and Rajamani won at number one before
Eitan Fay and
Ethan Samora posted a 6-3 victory as well to put Rochester up 1-0 on the scoreboard.
The Yellowjackets made quick work in the first three singles matches to clinch the match.
Kavin Shukla won 6-0, 6-1 over Ben Jacobs at four, followed by
Rahul Ravi's 6-3, 6-0 win at number three against Daniel Saxe.
Wang earned the match-clinching point at number two before
Krish Vennam won a lone three-set match against David Wang at the top spot in the order. Vennam won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to put Rochester on top 5-0 in the overall match.
Rounding out the sweep, UR's Rajamani won at number six before
Andy Liu edged Bellemare in three sets at number five, posting a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 triumph.
The Yellowjackets have a quick turnaround in their two-match weekend, playing host to Hamilton College on Sunday morning at 10 am.
