The University of Rochester women's tennis team captured the last three singles matches of the day to rally for a 4-3 victory over visiting Union College on Saturday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.
Rochester's final three wins were from sophomore
Maya Bravo, and juniors
Neha Dania and
Sanjana Karnam, with Karnam winning the fourth and match-clinching point for the Yellowjackets (4-3).
Union (2-2) started out by securing the doubles point, earning match wins at second and third doubles following Rochester's 6-1 win at first doubles from
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang over Luisa Arizpe-Sierra and Chara Meidani.
The Garnet Chargers got their victories in doubles play from Claire Langille and Skylar Semon at second doubles, 6-4 over Bravo and Karnam, and Sydney Alphabet and Calista Finkelstein, 6-3 over
Jasmin Toor and Dania.
Union kept the momentum rolling into singles play, taking two of the first three matches on court to go up 3-1 on the scoreboard.
Meidani won 6-1, 6-2 over Toor at number two, and following a Libby win over Semon at number one (6-2, 7-5), Arizpe-Sierra topped Yang at three 6-4, 6-3 to pull the visitors within one of clinching the match.
That's when UR's comeback started though, with Bravo defeating Alphabet 6-2, 6-2 at number four to keep the 'Jackets alive.
The sixth singles match between Dania and Langille went in favor of the Yellowjackets 6-0, 6-4, to set up the winner-take-all match at fifth singles between Karnam and Finkelstein.
In that match, the score was 5-4 in favor of Union during the opening set before Karnam took three straight games to swipe a 7-5 victory, grabbing all the momentum.
Karnam used that momentum to score an early break in the second set, but Finkelstein rattled off back-to-back game wins to lead 3-2. Karnam settled in after that, notching four straight games to secure the 6-3 second set win, clinching the match for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester is right back in action on Sunday afternoon, with UR hosting Hamilton College at 2 pm.
