For the second day in a row, the University of Rochester women's tennis team needed to rally, capturing the final five singles points of the match to claim a 5-2 victory over Hamilton College at the Goergen Athletic Center on Sunday evening.
The marathon match, that lasted five and a half hours, featured four singles matches that went a full three sets, with the other two matches featuring at least one 7-6 tiebreak set score.
UR's comeback win is the second straight, after the 'Jackets rallied from 3-1 down to win 4-3 on Saturday afternoon against Union College in a home match.
Sunday's triumph moves the Yellowjackets to 5-3 on the season, with Hamilton dropping to 2-1.
UR's
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam started things off with a 6-2 win at second doubles against Priyanka Challapalli and Hannah Walpole, but Hamilton took the next two to claim the team doubles point.
At third doubles, Muhan Cui and Shannon Cicero were 6-3 winners against
Lilly Caldwell and
Maya Bravo, with the deciding doubles match being at the top spot between Hannah Apsey and Stephanie Pratt versus
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang. The Hamilton duo posted a 6-3 win to take the first point of the match.
In singles, Hamilton's Pratt topped Yang at #2 to put the visitors up 2-0 on the scoreboard. Pratt ended up winning 6-3, 7-6 (2).
As it turned out, that was the last match Hamilton would win on the day, with Rochester finishing off the final five singles matches with victories to reach the final score of 5-2.
Toor started the comeback with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Challapalli at third singles. Bravo followed with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at fourth singles over Walpole, pulling the 'Jackets even on the scoreboard at 2-all.
At the top spot, Libby rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Apsey 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2 to move the score to 3-2.
Up next, just the fifth and sixth singles matches were left on court. At five, Karnam dropped the first set to Cui, while
Neha Dania earned a 6-4 win in her opening set against Samantha Rainero.
The second sets in those matches were flipped, with Karnam taking a 6-4 decision and Rainero winning 7-5 to force winner-take-all third sets in both contests.
In the end, Karnam took the third set at fifth singles 6-3 to claim the match-clinching point for the second day in a row, and Dania finished off a 6-3 third set win to defeat Rainero, ending the lengthy overall match.
UR now has a couple weeks off before returning to action on March 22 at home against Allegheny College.
