The University of Rochester women's tennis team showed no rust in its first match in nearly three weeks, stifling visiting Allegheny College in a 7-0 shutout victory on Saturday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.
Rochester (6-3) picked up its second shutout of the season, earning this one against a solid opponent who entered the match with 18 wins and a conference title already under its belt this season. Allegheny (18-5) captured the President's Athletic Conference title in the fall and will compete in the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships later this spring.
In Saturday's match, the Yellowjackets jumped ahead early, quickly securing the doubles point with 6-2 wins at both first and second doubles. The teams of
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang at first doubles and
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam at second doubles put UR on the board.
Rochester's third doubles combo of
Lilly Caldwell and
Sahithi Mathukumilli made it three doubles wins for the 'Jackets, earning a 7-5 win.
With play shifting to singles, the Yellowjackets asserted their dominance with all six matches going in favor of UR in straight sets.
Karnam blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 to put UR up 2-0 on the scoreboard, with Libby following with an equally impressive 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the top spot in the lineup.
The clinching point was won by Yang at number two, with that match going in favor of the UR first-year by a 6-2, 6-4 score.
