SPARKS, MD – The University of Rochester lacrosse team turned in an outstanding effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring host Stevenson University 6-0, rallying for a 14-9 victory on Friday evening at the US Lacrosse Headquarters Tierney Field.
The Yellowjackets (2-2), were locked in a tight battle throughout the opening three quarters, with Stevenson (4-3) holding a 9-8 lead with 15 minutes left in the contest.
In the fourth, UR took over, with senior
Gracie Giannettino powering the offense with four of her five goals on the day.
Lorelei King added a fourth quarter score and
Alyssa Gorny finished off the game with her fourth goal of the contest.
Overall, UR saw seven different players tally a score, with Giannettino leading all players with six total points (5 goals, 1 assist). After Gorny's four goals,
Anna Rogers finished with a goal and two assists.
King,
Kassi Boehl,
Jenna Ufberg and
Zoey Miller each scored a goal, with
Sara Mendelson providing an assist. In goal,
Isla Ablin made ten saves in the victory.
Gorny and Mendelson combined for nine draw controls on the day, while three players, Gorny, King and Rogers, led UR in ground balls, scooping up three each.
Stevenson jumped ahead in the early portion of the game, leading 3-1 after the opening quarter and sat up by three with just over nine minutes left in the opening half.
Rochester used a player-up goal by Ufberg to start a three-goal string to pull even early in the third quarter. Gorny's mark with 13:39 left in the third knotted the game at 6-6.
The two teams traded goals the rest of the third quarter, with Olivia Galati putting the Mustangs up one, heading into the final period.
Rogers connected on a pass to King who scored just 34 seconds into the fourth to pull the Yellowjackets even.
On the ensuing draw, Gorny corralled the ball for UR and Giannettino recorded what would be the game-winner with 13:53 left. That play started a four-goal run for the senior, with each goal being unassisted.
The stat sheet proved to be fairly even on the day, with UR leading 30-25 in total shot attempts. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but Rochester held a distinct advantage in clears, going 17-for-19, while Stevenson only was 10-for-15. The Mustangs led 16-10 in draw controls, with both teams recording 15 ground balls.
For its next game, Rochester returns home and will play its rescheduled home-opener on Tuesday afternoon against Oneonta at 4 pm.
