PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester lacrosse team picked up a win in its 2025 home opener, defeating visiting SUNY Oneonta 12-10 on Tuesday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester moves to 3-2 with the victory, while Oneonta drops to 1-5 on the season so far.
The visiting Red Dragons looked to battle back late in the third quarter and throughout the fourth, scoring four of the final five goals of the game. But Rochester's biggest lead, up 11-6, was enough, with the Yellowjackets holding on for the two-goal margin.
UR now has a 9-6 all-time record against Oneonta and has won six games in a row versus the Red Dragons.
Senior
Gracie Giannettino led the 'Jacket offense with five goals on the day. Teammates
Jenna Ufberg and
Alyssa Gorny each notched two scores, while
Lorelei King,
Sara Mendelson and
Kassi Boehl each found the twine once. Mendelson, Zoe Miller and
Anna Rogers each added a single assist.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Isla Ablin made 12 saves in the victory, with Gorny causing a team-high two turnovers.
Erin Esposito led UR with four ground balls, while King added three. In the circle, Mendelson corralled nine draws, while Gorny finished with seven.
Rochester held a distinct shot advantage in the game, leading 45-27, but only 24 shots ended on frame, compared to Oneonta's 22 shots on goal. UR also was solid in its draws on Tuesday, securing 18 of the 24 draw controls in the game.
Both keepers ended with 12 saves and each team finished with 18 successful clears, with Oneonta failing six, and UR missing three.
UR's Boehl started the scoring 90 seconds into the game, kickstarting an early 3-goal run by the Yellowjackets which also featured goals from Giannettino (free-position) and Mendelson.
In the closing seconds of the first, Oneonta's Elizabeth Doherty scored from the free position to make it a 3-1 game.
Oneonta's Ellie Downey made it 3-2 just over two minutes into the second quarter, but back to-back goals from King and Giannettino about 30 seconds apart quickly gave Rochester its 3-goal advantage back at the 10-minute mark.
The two teams traded the next four goals before Gorny notched a score with six seconds left in the period, sending Rochester into halftime with a four-goal lead, up 8-4.
In the third, Oneonta started the scoring with Cassidy Moore finding the net, but less than 20 seconds later, Gorny responded for the Yellowjackets.
Rogers found Ufberg for a score with 11:27 left in the third to give Rochester its biggest lead of the game, and after Oneonta trimmed the lead by one, Giannettino scored her fifth of the day to boost the UR lead to 11-6.
The rest of the way, Oneonta scored four goals to Rochester's two, including holding the Yellowjackets without a tally in the fourth, but the 'Jacket defensive effort was enough down the stretch to hang on the for the win.
Rochester now shifts its focus to Liberty League play, squaring off with a pair of road conference games this weekend. UR plays at RPI on Friday and at Skidmore on Sunday.
