The University of Rochester men's tennis dropped its first match following its spring break, falling to the Allegheny College Gators, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
Andy Liu picked up the Yellowjackets' lone win of the afternoon at No. 5 singles, defeating Allegheny's Will Jarvie: 6-2, 6-2.
The Gators would take all three matches to earn the doubles point before winning each of the first four singles matches to secure the victory. Anton Hedlund and Kristian Janci got the Gators started with a 6-0 win over
Alan Wang and
Surya Rajamani at No. 1 doubles, while Olivier Erkens and Levente Mihaly clinched the doubles victory with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles over
Eitan Fay and
Ethan Samora.
At No. 2 doubles, David Rodriguez and Arick Baldwin wrapped up the sweep with a 6-4 win over
Krish Vennam and
Josh Chu, while Janci kept things rolling into singles play, topping Vennam at No. 1 singles: 6-2, 6-2.
Up 2-0, Mihaly topped Wang at No. 2 singles: 7-5, 6-2, setting up a possible match-clinching point at either No. 3 or 4 singles.
Rodriguez would clinch the match for Allegheny, needing three games to top
Kavin Shukla: 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, while Anton Hedlund made it 5-0 with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 3 singles over
Rahul Ravi.
After Liu earned UR's lone point of the match, Chu and Baldwin wrapped up the contest at No. 6 singles, with Baldwin edging the UR sophomore: 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-7).
The Yellowjackets fall to 5-4 with the loss, while Allegheny moves to 8-6 with the win.
Rochester next hosts Houghton University on Friday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
