‘Jackets Blank Houghton in Women’s Tennis

The University of Rochester women's tennis team capitalized on a short-handed Houghton University squad, earning a 7-0 victory on Friday evening at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Rochester pushes its record to 7-4 on the season, with the Highlanders (1-15) wrapping up their regular season with Friday's loss.

UR was nearly perfect in the victory, posting 6-0 wins in all ten games played but one, with the other being a 6-1 victory.

Rochester was up 2-0 before the match even began, as Houghton submitted a lineup with just four players, allowing UR to earn walkover wins at fifth and sixth singles. That also meant Houghton had no third doubles team, allowing UR to take an early lead looking to take the doubles point.

Both of the 'Jackets doubles teams earned 6-0 wins to put the hosts up 1-0 after the doubles play concluded. Josephine Libby and Katie Yang were Rochester's top doubles combo, with Maya Bravo and Lilly Caldwell making up UR's number two team.

The doubles point win put the Yellowjackets up 3-0 on the team scoreboard, with Rochester only needing one more singles point to clinch the victory.

Neha Dania won that point with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Abigail Lloyd at the number four position.

At three, Sanjana Karnam followed suit with a straight set win over Kelsi Clapper. Bravo kept the 'Jackets rolling with a win over Zoe Zachery at number two, not dropping a game.

UR's final point came from Jasmin Toor at number one, with the junior earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Myakay Bartman.

Up next, Rochester heads on the road to play at William Smith College on Wednesday afternoon in a match starting at 4 pm.
