UR Toppled by #28 NYU

BRONX, NY – In its final road matchup of the regular season, the University of Rochester men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to UAA rival NYU on Sunday afternoon at the Stadium Tennis Center.

The Violets, ranked #28 in the latest Division III poll, improve to 9-2 on the season, while Rochester falls to 8-7 in the 2025 campaign.

NYU was able to grab early momentum, winning all three doubles matches to secure the team point. At one, regionally-ranked Boren Zheng and Philip Martin topped Ahaan Malhotra and Krish Vennam 6-2.

In the two spot, it was the same score in favor of NYU's Louis Frowein and Jingyuan Chen against Alan Wang and Surya Rajamani. The third doubles match between Kavin Shukla and Liam Rieger and Alex Lee and Bryan Hui was the closest, but the Violet team won 6-4 to complete the sweep.

During singles play, NYU was able to take all six matches in straight sets. UR's Vennam saw the most success in his match against Zheng who is the Division III nationally-ranked #29 player. Zheng would win 6-3, 7-5, but Vennam held his own in the match.

At two, Martin battled Wang, with Martin pulling away with a 6-3, 6-0 win. Chen topped Shukla 6-4, 6-0 at third singles and the clinching point was won by Hui against Andy Liu at four, winning 6-3, 6-2.

The closing two points were won by NYU's Frowein over Josh Chu (6-1, 6-0) at five and Ryan Shayani over Rieger (6-2, 6-1) in the six slot.

Rochester wraps up its regular season slate next Friday at home against Alfred University at 6 pm.
