PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 7-0 victory over the Alfred University Saxons on Friday evening at the Lyman Tennis Center.
With the weather cooperating for the first time this spring, the Yellowjackets got to play on their brand-new, outdoor tennis courts for the first time this season. The 'Jackets took full advantage, sweeping the Saxons and dropping just six points across the nine matches.
Liam Rieger and
Ethan Samora earned Rochester's first doubles win, topping Alfred's Mark Ungurian and George Fearon, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.
Ahaan Malhotra and
Krish Vennam then secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Breece Erickson and Jeffery Merejo at No. 1 singles, while
Alan Wang and
Surya Rajamani finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Matthew Bittel and Bill Tran.
In singles play, Rochester scored three 6-0, 6-0 wins, first at No. 5 singles, where Rieger made quick work of Fearon, and then at No. 4 singles, where
Joseph Xia shut out Ungurian.
With Rochester leading 3-0,
Eitan Fay clinched the win with another 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Jeffery Merejo, while
Kavin Shukla earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Erickson to make it a 5-0 Rochester advantage.
The Yellowjackets then closed out the victory with two more singles wins at No. 2 and 3 singles. At No. 3 singles,
Josh Chu topped Tran, 6-2, 6-0, while at No. 2 singles, Malhotra closed out the match and finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bittel.
With the win, the Yellowjackets wrap up the regular season at 9-7, while Alfred falls to 1-11 on the year.
UR next heads to Altamonte Springs, FL for the 2025 University Athletic Association Tennis Championships, beginning on Friday, April 25 at 8:30 a.m.
