BRONX, NY – The University of Rochester women's tennis team picked up two singles wins and won a doubles match, but it wasn't enough as host New York University earned a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Stadium Tennis Center.
Sunday's affair was a battle between two top-40 teams in the latest Division III rankings, with NYU ranking #28 and Rochester sitting at #36. The loss moves UR to 10-6 on the year, while NYU improves to 7-5 with the victory.
The match started well for UR, with
Maya Bravo and
Lauren Kallas earning a 6-2 win at third doubles against Norah Staunton and Hannah Chang.
Unfortunately for UR, the Violets took the remaining two doubles matches to steal the team point and grab the early lead. At two, NYU's Emma Kast and Jimena Menendez won 6-4 over
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam.
In the deciding doubles match, a tiebreak was needed between UR's
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang against Isabella Hartman and Siona Vallabhaneni. In the end, the NYU pair won 7-6, taking the tiebreak 7-1.
With play shifting to singles, the Violets quickly made it 2-0 when Victoria Wang topped Yang at three in straight sets. Hartman, a nationally-ranked player, followed by defeating Bravo at second singles 6-4, 6-2 to put the hosts within one point of taking the overall match.
UR's Toor held off that for a bit, claiming a victory at fourth singles against Aditi Narayan. Toor won 6-1, 7-6 (4) to earn the first 'Jacket point of the day.
The elation didn't last long though, as the first singles match proved to be the clinching point for NYU. In that match, Menendez, Division III's 7th-ranked player, topped Libby 6-1, 7-5 to put the Violets up 4-1 overall.
Rounding out the match, Vallabhaneni won 6-2, 6-0 against Karnam at five before
Neha Dania posted a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9 win in three sets against Kast to finish off play.
Sunday's match was the final regular season road matchup of the year for Rochester, with UR's next match serving as its home finale of the 2025 season. That contest is set for Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm against SUNY Geneseo.
