Rochester Falls to Top-Ranked Chicago in UAA Quarterfinal

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – Boasting a lineup with several nationally and regionally ranked players, the #1 University of Chicago women's tennis team upended the University of Rochester 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the University Athletic Association tennis championship on Thursday morning at Sanlando Park.

Despite the loss, the Yellowjackets (11-7) were able to hang tough with the Maroons (18-1) in multiple matches, most notably at first doubles and first and third singles.

The match opened with Chicago's regionally-ranked doubles team of Shianna Guo and Lauren Khou winning 6-1 over Neha Dania and Maya Bravo at the second position. Chicago would later secure the doubles team point by winning 6-3 at third doubles, with Sylwia Mikos and Erica Ekstrand topping Jasmin Toor and Sanjana Karnam.

At first doubles, UR's Josephine Libby and Katie Yang were right in the match, trailing just 3-4 when the doubles portion of the match was clinched, forcing the abandonment of the final few games.

In singles, Yang and Libby were the lone Yellowjackets to take games in their matches, with Libby trailing just 5-4 in the opening set while Yang dropped the opening set by a 6-4 score. Libby, playing at first singles, battled against the #6 singles player in Division III in Ekstrand, while Yang was taking on the #42 player and #9 in the central region Nicole Geller at the third singles spot.

Neither match was finished as Chicago had already secured the team win with 6-0, 6-0 wins at positions six, five and four. Overall, Chicago had four nationally ranked singles players in its lineup in the opening round of the three-day UAA Championship tournament.

Overall, Chicago has won three straight UAA titles and is the defending NCAA Division III team champion.

On Friday afternoon, Rochester will take on fifth-seeded Case Western Reserve University in the consolation round at 12:30, with Chicago squaring off with Washington University in St. Louis during the semifinals.
