ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – Facing off in the University Athletic Association's Women's Tennis Championship Consolation Semifinal Round, the University of Rochester women's tennis team fell to the 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans, 4-1, on Friday at Sanlando Park.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets will wrap up their weekend in Florida with the UAA seventh-place match against 29th-ranked NYU on Saturday, April 26 at 8:30 a.m., while the Spartans will face Brandeis in the fifth-place match.
UR and CWRU got going with doubles action, with the Spartans securing the doubles point at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Case Western Reserve's Laurel Utterback and Ellior Rose topped
Jasmin Toor and
Sanjana Karnam, 6-1, while at No. 1 doubles, Lily McCloskey and Katalina Wang, the 10th-ranked doubles team in Division III, edged
Josephine Libby and
Katie Yang, 6-3, to earn the doubles point.
Maya Bravo and
Lauren Kallas matched up with CWRU's Anna Kan and Katie Wong at No. 2 doubles, and the match would be left unfinished, with Kan and Wong leading Bravo and Kallas, 5-2.
Rochester would quickly tie things up in singles play, as Yang earned a win by opponent retirement over Wang at No. 3 singles, but the Spartans would pick up the next three singles points to take the match, 4-1.
At No. 5 singles, Asha Shukla earned CWRU's first singles point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Karnam, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1, while McCloskey, ranked 29th in Division III and 7th in her region, made it 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Libby and No. 1 singles.
Elsa Syed then wrapped things up for Case Western Reserve at No. 6 singles, defeating Dania, 6-1, 6-2, to finish off the match for the Spartans.
In the two unfinished matches, Bravo trailed Utterback, ranked 43rd in DIII, 6-1, 5-1, at No. 2 singles, while Kan was up, 7-5, 3-1, on Toor at No. 4 singles.
With the loss, Rochester drops to 11-8 on the year, while CWRU moves to 13-6.
Rochester will square off with NYU for the second time this season in the UAA seventh-place match on Saturday, April 26 at 8:30 a.m. at Sanlando Park.
