GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester men's tennis team fell to the Hobart College Statesmen, 5-2, in a midweek matchup at the Hobart and William Smith Tennis Center on Thursday.
Andy Liu and
Joseph Xia earned the Yellowjackets' lone victories of the afternoon, both coming in singles play. Lui made quick work of Hobart's Rahul Vallabhajosula at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-3, to score the first point of singles play, while Xia held off Marco Olmos in a three-set affair, 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, at No. 6 singles to wrap up the match.
The Statesmen would sweep all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the contest and then won three of the first four singles matches to secure the victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Nick Grosso and Nick Fischer downed
Josh Chu and
Ethan Samora, 6-4, while Vallabhajosula and Hyat Oyer earned another 6-4 win in doubles action for Hobart over
Surya Rajamani and
Alan Wang at No. 2 doubles.
Jacob Linares and Troy Steiner would finish off the doubles sweep for Hobart with a 7-5 win over
Krish Vennam and
Ahaan Malhotra to give the Statesmen a 1-0 advantage before Liu quickly tied things up with his win at No. 4 singles.
Hobart would win the next four singles matches, clinching the win at No. 3 singles with Grosso's 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over
Rahul Ravi, to go up 5-1.
Linares picked up the Statesmen's first singles win with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Chu at No. 5 singles, while Oyer topped Vennam, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles to set up Grosso with the clincher.
Fischer added another win for the home side with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Wang at No. 2 singles, before Xia's win at No. 6 singles wrapped up the contest.
Rochester falls to 6-5 with the loss, while Hobart moves to 5-7 with the victory.
The Yellowjackets will next celebrate Senior Day ahead of their matchup on Saturday, April 5, against Oneonta at 2:00 p.m. inside the Goergen Athletic Center.
