‘Jackets Roll Past Kenyon, 3-0

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester field hockey turned in a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, holding visiting Kenyon College without a shot as the Yellowjackets shut out the Owls, 3-0, to wrap up their season-opening weekend at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The 'Jackets got things going offensively just over two minutes into the contest, tallying 12 shots and six penalty corners in the first quarter. Sofia LaFalce fired UR's first salvo just past the two-minute mark, forcing the first of five saves by Sofia Chaves in goal for the Owls.

Rochester took seven shots and earned three penalty corners before breaking through in the eighth minute of the first. After Anya Arseneau's shot was blocked, the Owls' defense couldn't corral the rebound, and it made its way to Grayson Honig, who tapped it into a wide-open net to give UR a 1-0 lead.

UR would earn three more penalty corners down the stretch of the first, but shots by Kyla Byer and Arseneau were saved or blocked, and the 'Jackets would take a one-goal lead after one.

In the second, though, the Yellowjackets would double their lead, finding the back of the net off a 20th-minute penalty corner. Sophia Cuneo inserted the ball into Cassidy Romano, whose left-wing blast found the back of the net, doubling UR's lead.

Romano notched a goal for the second-straight contest, while Cuneo picked up the Yellowjackets' first assist of the year.

After taking 12 shots in the first, UR would fire off seven more in the second, putting 15 of their 32 total shots on goal, while dominating possession and keeping Kenyon out of their offensive area for much of the contest.

In the third, Rochester would add one more score, as Erin Foley notched her first career goal. Following back-to-back penalty corners in the 33rd minute, Arseneau again had her shot blocked, but the rebound found Foley, whose shot from the right side went past the keeper and a defender's stick for a goal.

Minutes later, UR nearly made it 4-0 as Honig fired a shot at Lucy Baker that was saved, and on the rebound, Elena Mendoza just missed, knocking her shot off the post.

The Yellowjackets kept the Kenyon defense busy throughout the third and fourth, with another 13 total shots and eight penalty corners in the second half, seven of which went on goal.

Down the final stretch, Kenyon briefly threatened, pushing forward in the final moments of the fourth, but UR's defense held firm and kept the Owls both off the scoreboard and without a shot to finish off the 3-0 victory.

Rochester moves to 2-0 with the win, while Kenyon falls to 0-2 with the loss.

Honig led UR with nine shots, seven of which were on goal, while Arseneau tallied six, three of which were on goal. Foley, Honig and Romano found the back of the net for UR, while Cuneo notched an assist.

Kara Houston got the start between the pipes for the 'Jackets and played just shy of 38 minutes, with Katherine Jensen replacing Houston midway through the third.

For Kenyon, Baker and Chaves combined for 12 saves.

The Yellowjackets next hit the road for the first time in 2025, making the short trip to Pittsford, NY for a matchup against Nazareth University on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m.
