Rochester Moves to 3-0 with OT Win Over Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY – Sophomore Molly Newbold slipped in a backhand shot off a rebound three and a half minutes into overtime, lifting the University of Rochester field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Nazareth University on Wednesday evening at NLPA Field.

Newbold's goal came off a rebound of a shot off the stick of Cassidy Romano that was saved by Nazareth goalkeeper Lauren Bachner. The 6-yard shot slipped between the legs of Bachner and was the UR sophomore's first goal of her career.

The win extends Rochester's dominance in the all-time series with the Golden Flyers, with the Yellowjackets holding a 25-4 record against Nazareth. URochester has won 16 straight in the series, with the one goal game being the closest contest since a 2-1 Yellowjacket win back in 2014.

Rochester, ranked #25 in the NFHCA Division III preseason poll, moves to 3-0 on the young season, while Nazareth falls to 1-1 with the loss.

After a scoreless first half in which URochester held a big 15-3 edge in shots, first-year Ella Krauss got the scoring started in the game during the 37th minute. Grayson Honig sent a pass over to the first-year who recorded her first goal of the season to put the Yellowjackets on top.

Three minutes later, sophomore Erin Foley doubled the lead tapping in a goal off an assist from Anya Arseneau.

Just before the end of the third period, Nazareth broke the shutout with a tally from Michaela Cushman, making the score 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Rochester controlled most of the play in the fourth quarter and looked to finish off the regulation win, but Nazareth's lone shot of the period, off the stick of Hannah Janes, found the back of the cage with just seven ticks left on the clock, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra session, Kyla Byer had two shots in close to open things up, but Bachner made two of her 18 saves on the Rochester sophomore. At the other end, Nazareth countered with a pair of shots that were kicked away by Yellowjacket keeper Kara Houston.

With play back near the Nazareth goal, Romano took a shot that was saved into traffic, with Newbold scooping up the rebound and tapping the backhand shot in for the win.

On the stat sheet, URochester held a distinct advantage, leading 34-7 in shots and 20-2 in corners.

Up next, the Yellowjackets host SUNY Brockport on Friday afternoon at Fauver Stadium, with that game starting at 4 pm.
