Men’s Soccer Falls at Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester men's soccer dropped its first road contests of the year at the Nazareth University Golden Flyers, falling by the final score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium.

UR would put the first shot on goal of the contest, a 16th-minute attempt by Mikey Burke, but it'd be the home Golden Flyers that broke through first. Just past the 27th minute, Nazareth took advantage of a Yellowjacket turnover in the midfield to take an early 1-0 lead.

Carson Keller picked up the steal and assist, dribbling down the midfield and finding Tyler Warmington ahead for the score, who beat Ben Ziegler to give Nazareth a 1-0 lead.

Ziegler kept the Golden Flyers from adding to their lead just over three minutes later, coming up with a save in the 31st minute on a Braden Callahan header off a Nazareth corner.

On the opposite end, the Yellowjackets tallied six shots, four of which were on goal, and four corners, in the first, but Bryan Tirado and the Nazareth defense kept UR from scoring, sending the two sides into the locker room with Nazareth in front, 1-0.

The Golden Flyers quickly doubled their lead to start the second, taking advantage of a free kick from just outside the box. Ziegler saved Spencer Neil's first attempt, but couldn't corral the rebound, and Gibson Spector tapped it in for the score to make it a 2-0 Golden Flyers advantage.

Rochester would get on the scoreboard less than five minutes later, as Will Fallona headed Daniel Steinacher's cross into the back of the net to cut Nazareth's lead to one.

The 'Jackets then had a shot to tie it with a pair of shots blocked and saves over the next three minutes by Pasquale Carusone and Sebastian Ballesteros, but Tirado came up with another save, and the Golden Flyers would take things the other way.

Another turnover just past midfield gave the Golden Flyers an opportunity, and Nazareth would take advantage with a tremendous goal from Braden Callahan just outside the box, assisted by Neil in the 58th minute.

Then, in the 66th minute, the Golden Flyers put the game out of reach, scoring off a corner kick on Gibson Specter's header, with Callahan and Neil picking up the assists.

UR had several chances late and down the stretch, forcing Tirado to make a couple of saves later, but the three-goal lead proved to be too much to overcome and the Yellowjackets dropped their second-straight contest, 4-1.

With the win, Nazareth moves to 1-0 on the year, while the 'Jackets drop to 0-2.

As a team, UR outshot Nazareth, 19-10, and 8-7 on goal. Rochester also had eight corner kicks, compared to just six for the Golden Flyers.

Individually, Alessio Cristanetti-Walker and Ballesteros each had a team-high three shots, while Fallona scored the 'Jackets' lone goal and Steinacher had the assist.

In goal, Ziegler made three saves but allowed four goals, while Tirado made seven saves and allowed just one goal for Nazareth.

Rochester next heads to Brockport, NY, for a matchup against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
