Rochester Downs Oswego in Mid-Week Matchup, 2-0

OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester men's soccer team notched its second-straight shutout, defeating the Oswego State Lakers, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Laker Turf Stadium.

The Yellowjackets quickly got going offensively, earning a pair of corners within the first five minutes of the contest. Both ended with shots wide from Kol Bassuk, but Rochester would continue to press their advantage offensively, outshooting Oswego, 5-2 in the first half and 13-4 for the contest.

Tajay Ellis took the Lakers' first shot of the contest a little over 13-and-a-half minutes in, sending one wide of the mark, while Johnny Makula matched Ellis on the opposite end, with a shot wide in the 17th minute.

Just shy of the 20-minute mark, Milos Bisenic put the first shot on goal of the contest, forcing the first of five saves from Max Mahlke, while Ben Ziegler was called upon for his first of two saves on the night in the 25th minute.

Ziegler saved an attempt from Benjamin Brooks to keep things scoreless, and after the Yellowjackets earned four corners over the next eight minutes, URochester broke through and found the back of the net.

Oswego cleared away the first of URochester's four corners in the 28th minute, but after the 'Jackets earned another corner off a 33rd-minute corner, Bassuk scored off Sebastian Ballesteros' ball in, heading the ball into the back of the net to give UR a 1-0 lead.

Rochester would earn yet another corner in the 42nd minute, one of seven first-half corners for UR, and the 'Jackets would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The 'Jackets looked to add to their lead to start the second, with another shot wide from Makula to start the offensive salvo in the 50th minute, while following another corner, Bisenic put a shot on goal on a free kick that was saved by Mahlke.

Then, in the 60th minute, off another free kick by Bisenic, Bassuk headed the ball into the box, but it was knocked away by a Laker defender. However, Oswego wasn't able to fully clear it and Jasper Danielian took advantage, curling a shot into the lower-right corner of the net to give Rochester a two-goal lead.

That'd be all the Yellowjackets needed as Ziegler and UR's defense held Oswego without a corner the entire contest, and to just two shots in the second half.

Ziegler made the save on Edis Omerovic's attempt in the 78th minute, while an earlier attempt by Jason Wuytack sailed wide.

Following Danielian's score, the Yellowjackets would put three more shots on goal by Ashton Prescott, Makula and Kamal Ibrahim down the stretch, forcing three more saves, before the final buzzer sounded with Rochester up 2-0 to give UR its second-straight win.

With the win, Rochester moves to 2-2-1 on the year, while Oswego remains winless at 0-2-2.

Individually, Makula led UR with five shots, while Bassuk and Bisenic added three and two shots apiece. Bassuk and Danielian scored Rochester's goals, while Ballesteros contributed the lone assist.

The Yellowjackets are back home for their next contest, hosting Hobart College on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
