3rd Quarter Surge Powers Yellowjackets Past Pacers

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester field hockey team scored three goals in a little over two minutes during a third quarter spurt, powering past Marywood University 4-1 on Senior Day at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

After sitting tied 1-1 at halftime, 21st-ranked Rochester (6-1) dominated the second half, holding Marywood to just one shot compared to a flurry of 23 for Rochester.

UR's goals came from Cassidy Romano, Sofia Mianzo, Sophia Cuneo and Grayson Honig. Senior goalkeeper Kara Houston made four saves and in the fourth quarter, defender Alexandra Robillard made a defensive save, keeping the Pacers (2-3) off the board.

In the opening quarter, neither team could muster much offense, with UR taking three shots to Marywood's one. One of the three found the back of the net though, as Romano ripped a center circle blast off a Cuneo penalty corner insert, putting Rochester up 1-0.

An early second quarter flurry of chances led to the Pacer tying goal. Dariane Jones circled in from the right side and sent back-to-back shots on goal that were saved by Houston. A third follow-up attempt by Brooke Barwick was deflected by Houston into the goal mouth where Emma Toth was waiting for a loose-ball tap-in.

After intermission, Rochester flipped a switch and held possession for nearly the entire third quarter, taking a whopping 15 shots over the 15 minutes, seven of which ended on goal.

Following a penalty corner, a Cuneo tip-in chance at the post went off a defenders foot on the goal line, leading to a penalty stroke for the Yellowjackets. Mianzo stepped up to the spot and connected on the goal, the first of her career, to put Rochester in front.

Less than a minute later, the Yellowjackets connected on the penalty corner tip-in play, with Cuneo scoring her second of the season of a left wing pass from Anya Arseneau.

Nearly 90 seconds after, the scoring burst continued with Honig depositing a center circle 8-yard turn-around shot to the low right corner after a centering ball from teammate Erin Foley.

Rochester kept pressuring offensively in the fourth quarter, taking eight shots, but backup keeper Bre Marchiano made six saves in the period to keep the score 4-1.

With under three minutes to play, Marywood's only shot on goal in the second half yielded a strong chance, but Robillard denied Jones' point-blank shot.

Prior to the game, Rochester's seven seniors, Houston, Arseneau, Abigal Mateer, Maggie Martin, Sofia LaFalce, Cori Freundlich and Emilia Parrado were honored with their families as part of the program's Senior Day.

Rochester returns to action on Wednesday evening, hosting SUNY Cortland in a non-conference matchup at Fauver Stadium starting at 5 pm.
