GENEVA, NY – University of Rochester women's soccer kept its unbeaten record intact with a scoreless draw against the 11th-ranked William Smith Herons on Saturday morning at Cozzens Field.
Despite outshooting the Herons, 16-6, UR couldn't push one past Antonia Goerke, with multiple shots hitting the crossbar and post, as well as seven saves.
Eleni McGuire got the start in goal for Rochester, but didn't face a single shot on goal, as the 'Jackets held William Smith to just six shots, none of which were on net.
Femke Laudy put Rochester's first shot on goal just under two-and-a-half minutes in, forcing Goerke to make the save. Laudy took both of UR's first two shots on goal over the first eight minutes, while
Ava Schmidt's next two were both blocked by the Herons' defense, the second of which came off a 'Jacket corner.
The Yellowjackets would hold much of the first-half possession in their attacking midfield, sending seven shots towards Goerke and the William Smith goal.
Riya Kunderan put another shot on goal for the Yellowjackets in the 32nd minute, while
Jane Mueller sailed an attempt wide just over a minute later.
Near the end of the first half,
Maya Bravo would force another of Goerke's four first-half saves with a 41st-minute attempt, while Julia Bragg took the Herons' two first-half attempts, both of which went wide.
Cece Vassallo and
Addi Verdon got the Yellowjackets going to start the second with a shot wide in the 48th minute, followed by a shot on goal from Verdon in the 55th minute.
The Herons then earned one of their three corner kicks in the 58th minute, but UR defended it well and held William Smith without a shot.
In the 64th minute,
Delia McMullen nearly made it 1-0, but her shot clanged off the crossbar and was then saved by Goerke. Then, in the 79th minute, Rochester had another tough bounce, as after Goerke couldn't push her pass past
Natalie Santangelo, the sophomore lofted a shot over the keeper that hit the far post, and bounced back into the field of play, rather than into the back of the net.
Down the stretch, Goerke added saves on attempts from
Hannah Nagashima and Laudy, while UR defended two more William Smith corners to keep the Herons without a shot on goal.
Rochester earned a late corner in the 89th minute that culminated in another Laudy attempt, but her shot went wide and the two sides remained scoreless when the final buzzer sounded.
With the draw, Rochester now sits at 3-0-3 on the year, while William Smith moves to 4-1-2.
Laudy led UR with four shots, three of which were on goal, while Schmidt added three. In total, UR took 16 shots and put eight on goal, while holding William Smith to just six shots, none of which went on goal.
Rochester returns home for its next contest, hosting SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 4:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
